7 Blonding Myths That Are Costing You Money (and Hair)

7 BLONDING MYTHS

that are costing you money (and hair)

Blonde looks effortless. Getting it right is anything but. Between social media videos, box dye promises and advice from a friend of a friend, it’s easy to walk into a salon (or into your bathroom) with ideas that set you up for disappointment. As Bonita Springs blonding stylists, we hear the same assumptions every week, and most of them cost people time, money and healthy hair.

Whether you’re a first-timer thinking about hair lightening or a longtime blonde ready for something new, here’s what’s actually true.

Myth #1: “Blonding and highlights are the same thing.”

They overlap, but they aren’t identical. Hair lightening is the process of lifting color from your hair. Highlights are one technique for placing that lightness. Blonding is the full plan: where to lighten, how to blend it, how to tone it and how to keep it looking good. When you ask for “highlights,” you might get a very different result than when you ask for lived-in blonde. Bring photos and let your stylist translate.

Myth #2: “You can go from dark to blonde in one appointment.”

Sometimes the answer is yes, but often the answer is “not safely.” Dark or previously colored hair may need multiple sessions to lighten without compromising its strength. A stylist who says “let’s do this over two visits” isn’t upselling you. They’re protecting your hair.

Myth #3: “Lightening always damages your hair.”

Lightening changes your hair, but damage isn’t inevitable. The outcome depends on your starting condition, how the lightener is applied and how carefully the process is paced. A good stylist assesses your hair first, lightens only what needs it and builds in time for conditioning and care. Healthy blonde is a result of planning, not luck.

Myth #4: “Lived-in blonde means zero maintenance.”

Lived-in color is low maintenance, not no maintenance. Its biggest advantage is how it grows out: soft, blended roots instead of a harsh line, which means longer stretches between appointments. You’ll still want occasional toning or glossing and a good at-home routine to keep your blonde looking fresh. Think of it as an easy relationship rather than a hands-off one.

Myth #5: “Purple shampoo fixes everything.”

Purple shampoo is a helpful tool, but it can’t fix every problem. Brassy or dull blonde can come from sun, chlorine, hard water, product buildup or a tone that has faded. Overusing purple shampoo can even leave hair looking dull or muddy. In Southwest Florida, where sun and pool water are a way of life, a professional gloss and a smart home routine do far more than a single bottle.

Myth #6: “The cheapest blonde is the best deal.”

A bargain blonde can turn into the most expensive color you’ve ever had. Fixing uneven lightening, breakage or an unwanted tone takes extra time, extra products and often extra appointments. Paying for skill and a proper consultation up front is usually the better investment.

Myth #7: “Blonde only works on certain hair.”

Blonding can be customized for almost any hair color, texture or length. Dark brunettes, naturally curly hair, fine hair and thick hair can all be lightened beautifully with the right technique. The goal isn’t to force one look onto every head. It’s to design a blonde that suits your hair.

Before You Book: Your Quick Checklist

  • Gather photos of looks you love (and ones you don’t).
  • Be honest about box dye and past color.
  • Ask how many appointments your goal may take.
  • Ask what upkeep to expect.
